This scene survived the budget cuts and the subsequent scene with Alfie Wise as the Alabama Trooper was added in the last few days of filming. Note that the encounter with the Alabama State Trooper was filmed later and about 2 miles away from this location. Movie magic made them look contiguous.
The original road the Sherriff's car is on in this scene was re routed in the mid-80s and is no longer there. It is just a grassy patch now.
